Stop thinking of nourishing your body nutrient by nutrient. Just like instruments in an orchestra, each nutrient works in combination with others to create the healing music

When medical science had just discovered the human body, they looked at the body as organs and functions, one at a time. Today, maximum research and evolved doctors across the world have accepted the fact that the mind and body work in combination with each other and medical procedures that only take the organ or the procedure in mind have a lower success rate than when the overall make-up of how the patient is going to respond to treatment is utilised better as a backdrop. Hence, in many surgeries including cancer treatments, the role of nutrition, meditation, moderate exercise is actively used to stabilise and help recovery.
In the same manner, just like we cannot isolate the organ of the person from their body and mind, we cannot isolate specific nutrients from their food and top up with specific nutrients rather than consume a holistic diet. People approach me and say, "Don't you have a supplement for helping me increase energy?" Yes sure, it’s called v-e-g-e-t-a-b-l-e-s. Or " Can you prescribe me something to accelerate weight loss, I don't want to change my eating habits as they are healthy." If your eating habits were actually healthy, why would you have the excess weight or why would you need the supplementation for that particular issue?
I prescribe supplements to my chronic disease patients, which are never to be taken in isolation without a nutritious diet. It’s important to understand that the role of the nutrient is in combination with other nutrients present in that particular food and the correct balance can only be arrived at by eating a larger quantity and variety of plant-based nutrients. So if you are deficit in something, taking an over-the-counter supplement is an inefficient way to absorb nutrients if you don’t combine them with a nutritious diet. Just like an orchestra where each instrument individually adds to the melody of the composition, the human mind and body will flourish much more if you are ensuring that most of your nutrients are coming from lots of green, leafy vegetables and salads along with colourful fruits, rather than extracts or pills.
Much before the invention of packaged foods, that is how we used to eat. And we moved around a lot more. But now, because the food industry has processed our grains, we are stripped of the very nutrients the grains had and then these companies re-add the nutrients back artificially. So you will pick up a breakfast cereal which has been fortified with a nutrient which was originally present in that particular grain but was stripped because of the processing of that grain. Ironic isn't it? Then why consume it? Why not look for a natural source that will give you the nutrient that is not artificially fortified?
The most important nutrients that we are usually deficit in our vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Vitamin B12 and iron is best achieved when 50% of your plate at lunch and dinner has two vegetables and a portion of cut salad along with a high fibre carbohydrate in moderate quantities. I have reversed severe anaemia with this without supplementation. Other benefits of eating like this are you will gain a tremendous amount of energy which no animal protein can give you. Vitamin D can easily be raised by eating certain kinds of seafood like salmon, herring, tuna, oysters or by simply consuming eggs with the yolk and mushrooms. And of course, India is a sunny country, get out into the sun a little more!
And as you step out into the sun for a long walk, don't forget the fact that the sun is not only giving you vitamin D, it is nourishing the rest of the orchestra called the human body by releasing serotonin inside your mind, hence filling your entire body with positivity. See? Even the sun does not have a unidimensional purpose in healing us! Now, go make your music.
